Parenting is complicated and stressful. People often feel that it should ‘come naturally’ and when difficulties are encountered, parents can feel an overwhelming mixture of guilt and failure. This can lead a person to become trapped in a cycle of behaviour which seems to make the problems worse. It can be hard to maintain perspective and learn new behaviours and better ways of coping, but counselling can help with this.
Many of my clients have unravelled the complexity of their parenting challenges within therapy and have come to understand the underlying issues causing their particular difficulties. It is possible to become empowered in this context and to learn new skills and coping mechanisms which will lead to a happier life for the client and their children.
